Tips From Your Charlotte Plumber

For when your faucet or toilet needs new parts: It can be intimidating for someone who is inexperienced to try and replace parts. Attempting this and then making a mistake can lead to bigger problems. But when the fix is a new toilet flapper or cartridge for your faucet, you don’t have much to be afraid of. And they should come with some simple instructions for you to follow.

For a loud sink: Nobody wants to have unnecessary noise when they are trying to relax at home. Stainless steel sink basins can be pretty loud at times. But they don’t have to be. One way to lessen the noise when there is two of them side by side is to fill in the space between them with some expanding foam. You can do this with your sinks already in place. But if possible, it is much easier to do before they are installed. Once the foam has had time to harden, you can use a knife to cut off the excess around the edges.

For when you drop something in the toilet: Nobody wants to stick their hand down the toilet to get something that was dropped inside. Good news. You might not have to. If you need to get something like a toothbrush or small toy, your first instinct might be to grab a plunger. Instead, you might want to reach for your wet/dry shop vacuum. Use that to suck out the water and the object both.

For when your showerhead is leaking: This might be an extremely easy fix. If you have a leak then you probably have threads that are not connecting as tight as they should. All you’ll need to do is unscrew your showerhead and wrap it with new thread tape. Put it on in a clockwise direction and then re-attach the showerhead. Or, if your shower head is clogged, you can try to soak it in warm water with vinegar. Then use a brush to loosen up anything that could be blocking the spray.

For when you need to flush but have no water: Have you ever had to ask to use your neighbor’s bathroom because yours was out of commission? This can be an embarrassing situation on a few levels. You can avoid this by using a bucket of water. Fill up a gallon bucket or two before your water gets shut off. Then use the water in the buckets to flush the toilet. You will get one flush per bucket. The only difference with this method is the bowl will not refill.

For when you want to know what is inside your walls: If are building a home or remodeling and opening up walls, take a photo of the inside of the walls while they are opened up. You can also do this for your floors and ceilings. This way you will have a record of where your framing, plumbing, and electrical lines are.

For your kitchen sink sprayer: It is so frustrating when you go to use your kitchen sprayer and it won’t pull out as far as it should. If this is happening to you, there is a good chance that the sprayer hose is getting caught on your shutoff valves. An easy way to take care of this problem is to put some foam pipe insulation around the pipes and their shutoff handles. Just a little tape will keep it in place. This is very cheap and very effective.

More Than You Can Handle

You probably have some essential tools at home that can handle some of these DIY ideas. Some situations don’t require anything more than a plunger and some effort. Of course, there are going to be times when a professional Charlotte plumber is needed to correct the problem. Trying to make your repairs on your own with advice from YouTube videos can make a plumbing problem into a huge plumbing problem.

We recommend calling a professional Charlotte plumber for the following situations.

  • Sewer line problems: Is your sewer line failing to drain like it is supposed to? This may mean that there is a bad plug inside your line that goes to the main sewer. In many cases, this is caused by tree roots and trying to correct it yourself can lead to disaster.
  • Poor water pressure: A lack of pressure throughout the home can be caused by a variety of things. It could be coming from your well or city water supply, an obstruction in your water lines, or even from a bad water supply layout. It can be impossible to figure out on your own, but your Charlotte plumber will know how to find the source of the problem.
  • Frozen pipes: If you end up with a frozen pipe, you should shut off your main water valve and then open a faucet. If you know where it is frozen you can check to see if it has cracked. If it hasn’t, you may be able to thaw it with a blow dryer. If it is cracked or you don’t know where it is frozen, you should call a professional. It may be best to just replace the pipe rather than thaw it out.
  • Hot water: It is no fun if you don’t have any. This is another situation that may be hard to find the cause. It may be anything from a blown fuse to a bad heating element. The experts at AAA City Plumbing will be able to identify your problem quickly and get your water warmed up fast.
