How can I take care of the drains in my home?

Tips On Properly Maintaining Your Drains

Charlotte PlumberDrains are a pretty mundane home topic, until they stop working. If you have ever experienced a backed up drain pipe, you know there is nothing mundane about it. From sinks that are slow to drain, to over flowing toilets, proper drain maintenance will lead to a happier home. Below are three tips on how to keep you drains working properly.

Tip #1: Fixing a clogged drain by dumping harsh chemicals into your sink may only be a temporary fix. Most clogs occur in the “p-trap”. A p-trap is the bent pipe below your sink that looks like a sideways letter ‘p’. P-traps hold water in them to ensure sewer gasses do not rise through your pipes and come out of your drain. Clogs often occur in your p-traps, and must be cleaned out completely. Simply dumping chemicals into your drain may push the blockage further down your pipes. It is better to use a properly sized plunger to fix clogs.

Tip #2: Does your kitchen sink smell bad? Does your disposal not grind up items like it should? First, try to avoid dumping large amounts of food items down to your kitchen disposal. It is always better to place as much as you can into the garbage can first. If you disposal is not grinding like it used to, or water is slow to drain, grind some ice cubes and dish soap. The ice cube will act as an abrasive on the walls of your disposal. The dish soap will cut heavy oils, and hopefully make your drain smell better. Be sure to use cold water when doing this.

Tip #3: Plungers are your friend. If water is draining from sinks and toilets too slowly, try plunging drains before calling a plumber. The idea you want to keep in mind when plunging is you are not trying to push items down, you are trying to bring them back up. After obtaining a proper seal with your plunger, pull up with a firm motion. This will loosen items so they may enter drains without bunching and clogging. This may require some practice, but is cheaper than calling a plumber.

Drains are a very necessary component to our homes working properly. Take care of them, and they will take care of you. Are you dealing with clogged drains in your Charlotte home? Call AAA City Plumbing at (704) 544-1909 and schedule a service call today!
